How our NHS prescription service works
Whether it’s a one-off or your regular repeat medicines, we make getting your NHS prescriptions simple:
Collect your prescription
Bring your prescription in or have your GP send it to us electronically. Most items are ready the same day, and we’ll let you know if anything needs ordering in.
Repeat prescriptions
Nominate Okus and your repeat prescriptions come straight to us electronically from your GP — no paper slips. Because we keep many common medicines in stock, they’re usually ready to collect the same or next working day.
Prescription delivery
A free local delivery service is available for eligible patients who find it hard to get to the pharmacy. Just ask our team if delivery would help.
Help and advice
Speak to our pharmacist about your medicines, side effects or how to take them — no appointment needed, and always free to ask.

Prescription charges & how to save
In England the NHS prescription charge is £9.90 per item (2026/27). But many people don’t pay — and if you pay for several items there are ways to save.
You may not have to pay at all
Around 9 in 10 prescription items in England are dispensed free. You don’t pay if you:
- Are under 16, or 16–18 and in full-time education
- Are 60 or over
- Are pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months (with a valid maternity exemption certificate)
- Have a listed medical condition and a valid medical exemption certificate
- Receive certain income-related benefits, or qualify through the NHS Low Income Scheme
Some items — such as contraceptives and medicines given to hospital inpatients — are always free. Not sure? Just ask our team and we’ll help you check.
Pay for several items? A prepayment certificate can save you money
A Prescription Prepayment Certificate (PPC) caps what you pay:
- A 3-month PPC costs £32.05 and a 12-month PPC costs £114.50 — however many items you need.
- It saves you money if you pay for more than 3 items in 3 months, or more than 11 items in a year.
- The 12-month PPC can be paid in 10 monthly instalments by direct debit.
- If you only need HRT medicines, an HRT PPC costs £19.80 for a year.

Tips to get the most from us
- Order repeats about a week before you run out
- Tell us about any allergies and other medicines you take, including anything bought over the counter
- Using one pharmacy for all your prescriptions keeps your medicine record in one place
- Ask about a dosette / blister pack if you find it hard to keep track of several medicines
- Keep your contact details up to date with us and your GP so nothing gets missed

Frequently asked questions
How do I switch my prescriptions to Okus?
It’s simple — bring your next prescription to us, or nominate Okus as your pharmacy so your prescriptions come to us electronically. You don’t need to visit your GP to switch.
Do I need to tell my GP?
Not usually. Once you nominate Okus, your GP surgery sends your prescriptions to us electronically. If you prefer, you can also ask your surgery directly to send them to us.
How much does an NHS prescription cost?
In England the charge is £9.90 per item (2026/27). Many people are exempt and pay nothing — and if you need several items, a prepayment certificate can save you money.
Can I get free prescriptions?
